AT 60, AGED TO PERFECTION!

By Dr. Wilfred M Mesquita, M.D., DGO, DFP (BOM)

60 years in the life of an institution is always remarkable, but 60 years in the life of an individual is a more significant milestone of time, when he finds himself at the watershed of his life which reflects his achievements and failures of his productive capacity. It is, indeed, a proud privilege for me to write about our leader Hon. Shri Laxmikant Parsekar at the precise moment when he has reached the interesting diamond milestone of his eventful life.

It is said that one never grows old; it is when one stops growing that he becomes old. Shri Laxmikant Parsekar will never stop growing, for his growth, particularly from the time he entered public life, has been a saga of never-say-die attitude and aptitude. His life is full - busy, busy and busy adding up to the success that beckons.

At 60, Shri Parsekar can proudly look at the legacy that he has created so far; that matters to his family, his party, his electorate and his innumerable supporters and, still, by leading a curious portfolio of activity: his legacy continues to grow, which reminds me of the words of the President of USA, Mr. Barak Obama, I quote, "a change is brought about because ordinary people do extraordinary things".

Shri Laxmikant Parsekar, as is well known, is basically from the noble teaching profession that runs in his blood and bones. The quality of the school he nurtured, as its head, has been a model for many such institutions. One can know him better by listening to his colleagues and his teachers during his school days, his college days and his university days. The narratives from them speak of one most notable and remarkable quality in him which is a great asset to his personality - the loyalty to his chosen system in which he works and has worked. This system could be his school, his college, his university from all of which he passed out as a postgraduate or it could be the organizational set up or the political party he chose to work for. In all these systems he remained loyal to respective ideology.

Shri Parsekar joined Bharatiya Janata Party's idealism for realism that promotes understanding. He did it, as is well known from him, by rebellion within his kith and kin who, until then, were followers of another political faith. He remains loyal to it. In the course of time, as Secretary, General Secretary and President of Goa BJP, he was one of the earliest in the Party to lay its bricks to see its huge edifice today.

Shri Parsekar earned his reputation through struggle and shrewdness, persistence and faith. Remarkably, he won three elections in a row - in 2002, 2007 and 2012 and thus he rightfully earned the berth in Goa Ministry's Cabinet as Health Minister. Those who saw him will still remember - he was ecstatic as he was declared elected in 2002 for the first time from Mandrem Constituency, having fought a fierce electoral battle against a veteran politician, thus earning the sobriquet of 'Giant killer'. His lasting contribution to develop progressive infrastructure and manpower in the facilities of healthcare in Goa deserves kudos.

His goodwill is beyond compare as our Chief Minister believes that people, who he serves with humility, are the greatest assets of the state. Shri Laxmikant Parsekar has a frame of mind of steel which belies his small fragile body frame. Often unfazed, he is non contentious and cannot be provoked by any kind of insinuation. He has simple solutions to difficult problems. Unlike many politicians, he does not run after or seek publicity, because he believes that his work and actions speak of his capability. As man with pleasant demeanor, comparisons don't bother his persona. Coming from a family of agricultural background, agriculture is his passion.

As Hon. Chief Minister of Goa, he follows the process of building the Government and addresses issues concerning the State successfully. The hope is bright that his contribution will be always lasting to the State with pragmatism displayed by him, taking risks on behalf of ideals of his Party.

The world is full of aspiring political leaders but, sadly, very few live up to ideals and values of good leadership. Shri Laxmikant Parsekar is a good example of an astute political leader going from the mould of just a politician to the framework of a statesman. With the loyalty to the State which he is leading, and with abiding faith in the decency, intelligence and patriotism of electorate of Goa and by displaying courage to stand up and say what needs to be said rather than what he wants to hear, I am sure, he will keep growing and marching victoriously towards more and more glory.

May the sweep of his 60 years and adulation that he has earned, continue to take him to his next milestone of eventful 75 years.
